Popular New York City Singer Attacked in Anti-Gay Hate Crime

A well-known singer and fixture in New York's LGBT community was viciously attacked in what police have described as an anti-gay hate crime.

Kevin Aviance was robbed and beaten by four men in Manhattan's East Village after leaving a local gay bar following a photo shoot. Police and media reports indicate that four men began to throw objects and shout anti-gay epitaphs at Aviance as he tried to hail a cab near the bar. One of the men allegedly punched Aviance in the face, knocking him to the ground.

Aviance suffered a broken jaw and was treated at a Manhattan hospital. The four men were charged with first-degree assault as a hate crime.

The vicious attack of Aviance, known for his elaborate costumes and hits including "Give It Up" and "Din Da Da," has stunned the LGBT community, coming just two weeks before New York City's annual LGBT Pride celebration parade. Local activist and performer Ari Gold is one of many who have spoken out against the attack.
